A new study from Lucy Osler at the University of Exeter dives into how human–AI interactions can shape inaccurate beliefs, distorted memories, and even delusional thinking. Using distributed cognition as a lens, the research shows cases where people’s false beliefs were not only amplified but actively built up through conversations with AI as if the AI shared our reality.
Osler explains that when we lean on generative AI to help us think, remember, and tell our life stories, we can end up hallucinating with the machine. This can happen when AI inserts mistakes into our collective thinking process, but it also happens when the AI strengthens and elaborates on our own delusional ideas and self-narratives. In other words, the AI isn’t just a passive tool — it can shape, validate, and extend our misperceptions.
The core insight is what Osler terms the “dual function” of conversational AI: these systems act both as cognitive aids (helping us think and remember) and as social partners that seem to share our worldview. That social-facing role is crucial. A notebook or search engine records our thoughts, but a chatty AI can give us a sense of social validation, making false beliefs feel like they’re held in common with another entity and therefore more real.
There are real-world cases in which a generative AI became part of someone’s cognitive process — in some instances linked to clinically diagnosed delusional thinking and hallucinations, sometimes described as AI-induced psychosis. The study notes that AI has distinctive features that can make it especially potent at sustaining delusional realities: AI companions are instantly accessible, and personalization algorithms tune them to seem like-minded and supportive, reducing the impulse to seek outside perspectives.
Unlike an imperfect human who might eventually voice concern or set boundaries, an AI can provide unearned validation for victimhood, entitlement, or revenge narratives. This can create fertile ground for conspiracy theories to blossom, as the AI helps users craft increasingly elaborate explanatory frameworks.
This dynamic can be especially appealing for people who are lonely or socially isolated, or who feel unable to discuss certain experiences with others. An AI companion offers a nonjudgmental, emotionally responsive presence that can feel safer than human relationships.
Osler adds a cautious note: with more sophisticated guardrails, built-in fact-checking, and reduced sycophancy, AI systems could be redesigned to minimize the errors they introduce and to challenge users’ inputs more effectively. Yet a deeper concern remains: these systems rely on our own life narratives. They lack embodied experience and full social embeddedness in the world to know when to go along or when to push back, which can limit their ability to correct us.
Bottom line: as AI becomes more integrated into our thinking and storytelling, we should be mindful of when it mirrors our beliefs and when it amplifies them. The line between helpful assistance and echo chamber can blur, and that has real implications for how we understand truth, memory, and self-conception.
