Mayor Danny Breen believes that asking residents to stay off the roads is the key to giving snow-clearing efforts the breathing room they need. And he's got a point - with the latest storms spreading out over nearly a week, it's a different beast compared to the infamous Snowmageddon of 2020, which hit hard and fast.
In 2020, Snowmageddon dumped 76 cm of snow on St. John's and its neighboring towns, with even more in Paradise and Mount Pearl. This time around, Paradise has seen a whopping 144.8 cm, and St. John's is not far behind. But Breen argues that it's not just about the amount of snow - it's the conditions and the challenges faced by the city's crews.
"It's not based on the amount of snow we get, it's based on the conditions and the circumstances you're in at the time," Breen emphasizes.
So, the city is taking a different approach. They've cancelled garbage collection, kept the on-street parking ban, and closed all public facilities to give their crews the space they need to tackle the snow.
In neighboring Paradise, Mayor Patrick Martin agrees that a state of emergency is not necessary right now. He's urging residents to stay home and let the crews work their magic.
"Council is continuing to monitor the situation... Crews just need a little more time to get everything cleared up," Martin explains.
With schools already closed for winter break and essential services adapting, St. John's and its neighboring towns are showing resilience in the face of this winter storm.
